During the Pregnancy

What feelings and thoughts did you have when you found out I was pregnant?

"It took my emotions some time to catch up, but I was simultaneously all in. At that moment, I had already embraced the commitment of having a child, but my emotions were still catching up. For a brief time, I felt overwhelmed, but I ultimately realized it was just a new level of excitement being unlocked."

What activities and routines did we do during my pregnancy?

“Walk at the park and the beach, hot sex, going on more food dates, and spent a lot of quality time with you.”

What did you do to prepare for my birth?

"Anything and everything I could, to the best of my ability."

What would you do differently?

"I think I would have been more selective about the people we kept close to us sooner. It would have made prioritizing the baby easier."

The Birth of Our BB

Did you have any expectations of what our birth would be like?

"Not really. I intentionally avoided having expectations. If we did, it would be like trying to fit a circle into a square hole—it just wouldn’t work. Birth was an opportunity to see how we could go with the flow."

How did you feel about my 48-hour birth?

"It wasn’t as intense as it sounds. Calling it a 48-hour birth makes it seem more daunting, but when you’re in the moment, time flies. I barely even noticed how long it was. Maybe it’s just me, but I perform well in intense situations, so I felt prepared for whatever happened."

How was having a doula as the only other person on our birth team?

"It was more helpful than I expected. She filled in the gaps of uncertainty throughout the birth and pregnancy, which turned out to be a huge help."

Can you tell us the birth story from your perspective?

"From my perspective, it felt like my role was to be the emotional anchor. Amidst the uncertainty of not knowing how long the labor would last, the only thing I could be certain of was my ability to provide as much stability and support as possible until he was born. Whether it was timing contractions, getting you water, giving massages, or making trips to the hospital—it didn’t matter. My priority was making sure you could give birth, no matter how many trips it took."

Identity: Father, Dada, Daddy, Dad

What did you feel when he was finally born and in your arms?

"It felt like I jumped into a vortex of every emotion possible. When you feel everything at once, it’s hard to describe."

How were the first days and the first month?

"It felt like positive delusion. Everything was hazy and surreal, but at the same time, I was confident that everything was unfolding exactly as it needed to."

Advice to First Time Parents

What would be your advice to first-time moms, from the perspective of a birth partner?

"Make it your own experience. Sure, take advice from those you trust, but ultimately, don’t be afraid to center the experience around yourself. You’re the one giving birth, and that matters more than anything else."

What would be your advice to first-time dads who are birth partners?

"Don’t beat yourself up over the uncertainty. It’s part of the process. If you’re not used to embracing uncertainty, now’s the time to get comfortable with it. Relax into the experience. As long as you know you’re doing your best, let go of the rest. There’s no point in trying to force more than you can give—and that, to me, is the beautiful part of it all."

Despite the uncertainty of giving birth, what ways do you think others can make sure their birth remains meaningful?

"By making an effort to find gratitude throughout the process. It might sound simple, but it’s actually a challenge—and that challenge can make the experience deeply meaningful. It’s easy to focus on what could go wrong, but I encourage parents to focus on what has gone right and what is going right. That mindset ensures meaning, no matter how the birth unfolds."

Final Remarks

Witnessing my partner’s reflections on our birth journey has deepened my appreciation for the unwavering support he provided—from the earliest days of pregnancy to the transformative moment of meeting our son.

His words remind me that birth is not just the arrival of a baby but the unfolding of a family’s foundation, built on love, resilience, and authenticity.

If you’re preparing for your own birth, I hope this interview offers insight into the beauty of partnership during such an intimate experience. Remember, every birth is unique, and having someone by your side who anchors you in presence and trust can make all the difference.
